We are starting our reading assignment.  For the next 3 weeks we will all be reading Toni Morrison's book Beloved. This is not a typical novel in that it is written in third person with occasional narratives in first person.  Check the calendar for a reading schedule.  We should have approximately 4 weeks to read this book.  We will also be discussing The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander as a social commentary on how 'slavery' has not entirely disappeared from our country.

To introduce the book we will read The Narrative of Frederic Douglass which is his account of growing up as a slave in Maryland. Douglass presents us with a unique perspective as being an individual who witnessed slavery firsthand.
