After finishing the movie, Persepolis, an interesting theme arises on what "home" means. Home is community, friends, school, family, church, society, etc. It is a very broad concept. As a theme, Marji is faced with many dilemmas: She is forced to leave Iran, returns and then leaves again. The question for you to answer is this:
Can you truly go home? - You will be writing a short essay answering this essential question. Due 4/13 and 4/14
Answer this question with a minimum of three (3) paragraphs. Each paragraph must have a minimum of seven (7) sentences. Use your knowledge and information from the movie and your own personal experiences to answer the question.
This assignment is worth 20 points – due in class.
1. Make sure you have a topic sentence for each paragraph. Topic sentences are usually general and not specific. Let your paragraphs answer the topic sentence.
2. Have a thesis/argument based on the prompt “Can you truly go home”?
3. Make sure your spelling, grammar and writing conventions are strong.
4. Use transitional phrases and words to emphasize your writing. For example, to emphasis addition, write “furthermore”. To emphasize time, use “after, meanwhile, during, etc”
5. Your conclusion should clarify and define your argument.
As our final project, we will gain exposure to the practice of veiling woman (either mandated or voluntary), both inside certain Muslim nations as well as in non-Muslim nations. We will be looking at news articles both in support and against the practice of veiling women and discussing this practice.
Purpose of this assignment:
- Relating a literary work to the ideas of its time. Because the graphic novel is set during the Islamic Revolution in Iran, you will be spending a great deal of time learning how to incorporate this historical background information into your overall understandings from the book.
- You will also be recognizing the use of arguments for and against an issue.
- Using evidence to support an argument.
- Reading a wide range of print and nonprint texts.
- Applying a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate and appreciate texts.
Project - For and against the Veil - 30 points.
Your group will be making a short presentation based on your notes (For and Against the Veil), from the two articles, Persepolis and your own bias and ability to track the argument.
The presentation can be in the form of a news broadcast, powerpoint, written essay, etc. Your arguments must be for or against banning the veil or demonstrate both sides of the argument.
Your presentation must include the following:
- Three (3) arguments for the veil.
- Three (3) arguments against/banning the veil
- Two quotes from the articles to support your claims.
- Providing two or more viewpoints.
- Descriptions of what you see. What you think veiling means to women in Muslim cultures. Your personal reaction to the images.
